Zoumana Tereta was born in 1963 in Bamako, Mali. He started playing music at age 16 on a small stringed instrument of the Fulani people called Krinyani.

At age 26 he started playing soku fiddle and bonfle, a small Fulani flute. He learned to play by ear and began playing weddings, ceremonies, and clubs. Zoumana also participated in many of the district ballets in Bamako like Biennal, and Badema National.

A legend of the modern Malian music scene Zoumana can be heard on literally hundreds of cassettes. He has played most of Europe, America, Australia, and many countries in Africa. He has worked as producer, band leader and a sideman contributing his sound to many of Mali’s well known artists including Sali Sidibe, Nahawa Doumbia, Oumou Sangare, and Toumani Diabate. The ensemble heard on this CD is very popular in Bamako and features Vieux Parre (who is also a great producer) on guitar. With calabash laying the percussion and the djeli n’goni ba driving the low end you really get a taste of that slow blues-funk signature to music of the Segou region.
