Mady Keita

Mady Keita
Mady Keita was born January 13, 1964, in Bamako, Mali.
He grew up in one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Medina Coura, and started playing Djembe at the age of fourteen. His teacher is the renowned Moriba Keita (student of the famous Daba Keita, the Mendianni Revivalist and original co-director of the Guinea National Ballet). Mady plays a relatively low-tuned Djembe because he feels it is the natural sound of the drum. His style is indicative of the respect that he holds for himself and his ancestors. Unlike many modern day musicians, Mady feels these rhythms are traditional and should not be changed --- they connect the people to their ancient culture. Each rhythm has its own songs and dances with lead Djembe phrases to match. All his improvisation is done inside the traditional phrases. Because of this rare and authentic approach to the drum, he is well known as a Roots Djembe Traditionalist and is sought out by students from around the world as a keeper of tradition. Mady often travels outside of Mali to perform and teach, especially to Japan and Australia.
